Winnipeg: Northern Terminus of the Jefferson Highway

Winnipeg is the northern terminus of the Jefferson Highway, the “Pines” end of the “Pine to Palm” route that runs all the way to New Orleans. As the capital and largest city in Manitoba, it’s a cultural and historic hub, built on a foundation of trade and transportation.

Start at The Forks National Historic Site, where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet. Visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, wander the historic Exchange District, and see Inuit art at Qaumajuq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The highway’s history is part of the city’s story. A motorcade led by Winnipeg’s mayor left here on January 23, 1926, to publicize the new route, and a second one followed in 1957. A monument on Pembina Highway, erected in 1974, commemorates Winnipeg as the northern end of the highway.
