The Osage Trace: Oklahoma’s Ancient Highway
The Jefferson Highway traces a path through Oklahoma that is one of the oldest continually used roads in the state. Historically known as the Texas Road or Osage Trace, this ancient route cuts directly through the heart of the former Indian Territory and the Louisiana Purchase lands, linking the Kansas border down to Texas.
The Jefferson Highway (JH) proudly predates Route 66 by nearly a decade, giving travelers a true glimpse into the earliest days of American auto-touring. This journey is rich with Native American heritage (passing numerous tribal lands and headquarters), pre-Route 66 auto-trail history, and industrial legacy in historic mining towns like Picher.
Today, the route is approximated by U.S. Highway 69, which the state Senate has officially designated as the Historic Jefferson Highway Route. Travelers will find roadside gems like the Art Deco Coleman Theatre in Miami, remnants of the unique "Ribbon Road" pavement near Vinita, and historic markers in towns like Muskogee, Eufaula, and McAlester.
