Gearhead Curios & Petrol Motor Quart

Gearhead Curios is a souvenir shop, photo-op, and a place to make and share stories. It is located in a 1939 Texaco station made from native stone in Galena, Kansas.

A Roadside Attraction  Not to Miss!

This roadside attraction is packed with details you won’t want to miss. Authentic, Bennett gas pumps sit beneath a canopy (pumps canopy) created from the hoods of a 1951 Mercury and a 1957 Oldsmobile, while a Wayne visible gasoline pump stands tall in front of a 1951 Hudson, a tribute to “Doc” from the Pixar movie Cars.

The west side of the building displays the “Tag Flag,” made from 169 Kansas license plates and illuminated by red, white, and blue old-school motorcycle helmets. Next to the Tag Flag stands “Big A, the Texaco Giant,” a 22-foot tall custom giant. Molded from the Second Amendment Cowboy (muffler man) with a Paul Bunyan head. His arms and hands are posed differently—one waving like the Texaco Big Friend, the other holding a custom-made wrench. Big A sports a goatee and painted sideburns resembling Gearhead Curios’ owner, Aaron Perry.

Take a picture with the Big Boy holding tires from Aaron’s 1958 Ford Custom 300; these were on his car when the Texaco found him in 2018. Rock-a-Betty the Texaco Girl holds motor oil cans (for cars, boats, and airplanes) on her tray, and her apron features a Kansas map.

Travelers can announce their arrival by stepping on the air bell hose as it rings inside. At dusk, enjoy the neon lights; the red Texaco sign, the green glow that lines the building, and the Texaco lollipop sign. The attention to detail continues inside, where gas pump nozzles have been repurposed as light fixtures. Warm up next to the fireplace made from a 1933 Chevy.

The ceiling displays over 700 license plates from travelers around the world with dedications and stories to be part of Route 66 and the Jefferson Highway.

It’s believed the restroom is the most photographed on these byways, even offering “Hit the Funnel” merchandise. A midcentury toilet sits beside a urinal created from a funnel, and the sink is an oil basin, with other car parts used throughout. The store boasts 20 unique t-shirt designs for Gearhead Curios, along with hoodies, coffee mugs, keychains, Kansas Route 66 centennial items, and much more.  It is also the only State of Kansas Tourist Information Center along Route 66 and the first Jefferson Highway Information Center.

A road trip conversation with Aaron Perry and Cassandra Ringel, the passionate owners behind Gearhead Curios and the highly anticipated Petrol Motor Quart in Galena, Kansas.

Petrol Motor Court is Coming!

Coming soon to Galena, Kansas is Petrol Motor Quart which will be located 2 blocks north of Gearhead Curios.  It too sits on both historic Route 66 and the Jefferson Highway and will be a destination, not simply lodging.

It will be a unique experience with themed cabins, each a tribute to the vintage gas stations that served travelers along these byways. Guests can expect mid-century decor and architectural nods to different eras, providing a comfortable and captivating escape into the nostalgic charm of Americana.

There will be 10 total cabins which the owners chose because of their special meanings. On the second lot from the south will stand Polly Gas because its logo was a green parrot and this station is to remember the Green Parrot Bar that once stood on the property at 317 S Main (current address of Petrol Motor Quart).

Another station will be Whiting Bros for its bygone days of prominence along Route 66 in the southwest, only one remains open.  The other stations will be Phillips 66, White Eagle, Chevron, Union 76, Esso, Clark, Deep Rock, and DX.

Watch the Facebook page for progress and the announcement of the first cabin available for reservations: https://www.facebook.com/PetrolMotorQuart
